Neutron Activation Analysis
Radiochemists use neutron activation analysis (NAA) to identify and measure elements in a material. The sample is exposed to neutrons, which cause some of its atoms to become temporarily radioactive. As those atoms decay, they release characteristic gamma rays that act like a fingerprint for each element. By measuring these gamma rays, scientists can determine which elements are present and often measure extremely small amounts without destroying the sample.
